The Capitol building in Hartford was the site of a gathering of about 500 people protesting the actions of Pres. Donald Trump and his administration on Feb. 5.
The protest was one of 50 planned at state capitols across all 50 states under the movement’s social media hashtags #BuildTheResistance and #50501. The numerical title signifies 50 protests in 50 states on a single day. The budding initiative took place mostly online and by word of mouth.
The movement has three main objectives: to combat oppressive policies outlined in Project 2025, the “Eroding Liberties” caused by heightened surveillance and cuts to the funding of public education and healthcare, and lastly, the perceived divide 50501 describes as being caused by “weaponizing institutions and targeting marginalized groups,” according to the official 50501 website.
The Hartford event featured a few speakers who also acted as organizers.
“My goals are to make I’m sure every single person is heard,” said one man, who declined to give his name. “You’ll hear me talking. You heard me throughout the day talking about how Connecticut has heard you. That our leaders have heard you. The world has heard you.”
Not everyone in attendance was a supporter of the movement. One agitator appeared on the scene, screaming “Democrats are f—ing racist!” as well as calling some of the protesters slurs. The organizer urged protesters “do not engage.”

While Trump’s actions regarding civil rights and unconstitutional executive orders were central concerns, many attendees also held signs displaying dissatisfaction with Elon Musk and his recent activities, particularly those related to the U.S. Treasury, with chants of “Deport Musk” and “hey, hey, ho, ho, Elon Musk has got to go.”

The 50501 movement has announced that it has partnered with Political Revolution, a grassroots organization initially formed to support U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign. So expect to hear more about the movement.
